The final step involves hermetic sealing to protect contents from moisture, oxygen, and contamination. Heat sealing is common, using heated bars to melt and bond film layers; ultrasonic sealing is used for sensitive products, as it generates less heat and preserves integrity. A cutting mechanism then separates individual packages from the continuous roll. What defines high-speed FFS systems is their ability to produce 200–500+ packages per minute, depending on size and product complexity. This speed is enabled by advanced automation: programmable logic controllers (PLCs) manage real-time adjustments to film tension, filling rate, and sealing temperature, while HMI panels let operators monitor performance and troubleshoot without interruptions. These systems offer key advantages: they cut labor costs, increase output to meet high demand, and ensure consistent package quality—critical for brand reputation. Flexibility is another strength: many systems switch between package sizes or film types with minimal downtime, making them ideal for multi-product manufacturers. Hermetic seals also extend shelf life, reducing food waste and enhancing consumer trust.
